Why Start A Career with RUKA HAIR

Company vision and mission

We are RUKA hair, a young start up with a big vision; to reshape the narrative and raise the bar for beauty standards, one solution at a time. The word RUKA means “doing hair” and we mean it when we say it – we want to do hair like it has never been done before. Our mission is to create hair and beauty solutions that truly work, by listening closely and making the outsiders our insiders. We want to build a brand for black women worth being loyal to, and we’re starting by developing curly hair extensions which truly match our curl patterns.

A career at RUKA HAIR looks like

We are a team of 9, having moved on from places like McKinsey, Bain, Philip Kingsley, Coca-Cola and Urban Outfitters to dedicate ourselves to building RUKA. At one point or another, we have all experienced environments where we didn’t feel comfortable to be our full selves, we didn’t feel safe in sharing our ideas, and we didn’t feel empowered to prioritize end-users who look like us and our communities. A career at RUKA to us means joining a high-performing accelerator of personal and professional growth, and actively contributing to a great workplace for each other. We’ve reflected this in our core values as a team:

🤩 Being exceptional – Doing hair like it’s never been done before means we must lead by example in everything we do – exceptional quality and results with the highest integrity and consciousness.

🌈 Living a colourful life – At RUKA, we believe everyone can achieve their professional growth without compromising on a colourful personal life. We think that being agile is doing what we can to make RUKA work for the lives of our consumers and our colleagues.

🚀 Acting without fear – We aren’t scared of the unknown or the difficult questions. We’re at RUKA to take risks and push boundaries – we know that’s what it takes to rethink the way black women experience hair and beauty.

🗣 Sharing feedback as wisdom – To us, being wise means knowing that we are NOT all-knowing. We humbly accept that we will continuously learn, and that there is value in every mistake. Getting that value means taking feedback from our consumers and each other – and seeing feedback as golden nuggets of wisdom.

👸🏾 Paying attention to the outsiders – At RUKA, every solution is built in partnership with our co-creator community, and this continuous conversation is what helps us question the status-quo.

Diversity in inclusion strategy

Making inclusivity the default – inclusion isn’t a business initiative to us, it’s a state of being. We are a 75% female, 75% black and 15% LGBTQ+ team, and inclusivity to us means holding each other accountable, stopping to listen to others, and never apologising for a perspective.

About us

We are RUKA hair, a young start up with a big vision; to reshape the narrative and raise the bar for beauty standards, one solution at a time. The word RUKA means “doing hair” and we mean it when we say it – we want to do hair like it has never been done before. Our mission is to create hair and beauty solutions that truly work, by listening closely and making the outsiders our insiders. We want to build a brand for black women worth being loyal to, and we’re starting by developing curly hair extensions which truly match our curl patterns.

About the role

RUKA is looking for a talented Lead Software Engineer to help us build a game-changing platform for hair commerce and community experiences. You will be the perfect hybrid of engineering and commercial excellence; deeply understanding the community and distilling digital features from their stories, whilst also making sound engineering choices to build a solid, scalable architecture.

You’ll have experience building in some preferred web languages (e.g. HTML, CSS, Javascript) and/or a web app framework (e.g. React, Django, AngularJS, Rails). You have a solid grasp of how e-commerce sites work front to back, and may even have experience building APIs for Shopify stores (but if not, you find it easy to learn new technologies and tools quickly).

You will work alongside our creative team to develop innovative, intuitive experiences that push the boundary for D2C – through their simplicity, functionality and incredible aesthetic. You may lean in on their expertise but you’ll also contribute to UI/UX decisions, applying your perspective of the D2C space, your deep understanding of our end-user plus your instincts for look and feel. All of this alongside a passion for e-commerce will allow you to quickly create value for our community and the business.

Impact you’ll own

  • Become proficient in our current environment and learn how our current systems work together to support the full user journey
  • Work on both the front end and back end integrations (of a currently Shopify-hosted store) to deliver a consistently excellent e-commerce experience to RUKA customers
  • Collaborate with our Creative Director to design and maintain a beautiful, elegant shopping experience
  • Work closely with our Marketing team to run campaigns, continuously improve conversion and ensure preparedness of our website
  • Work with the COO to shape the digital roadmap and release new major features onto our website, plus redefine our technology stack as we scale
  • Proactively set up, maintain and troubleshoot integrations and other technologies to optimise our website and create a seamless flow of information as we scale (e.g. fulfillment systems, social media, CRM and analytics

What you bring

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, building beautiful digital shopping experiences, preferably with fluency in JavaScript based languages/frameworks
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or similar technical field of study, and/or equivalent practical experience
  • Implementing best practice software development methods such as writing testable code, code review, clean code, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and DevOps
  • Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills, with an enthusiastic attitude to support and resolve customer problems
  • Balancing consumer-centricity, technical feasibility and commercial goals
  • Working in an Agile environment and experience participating in Sprint ceremonies
  • A self-starter, quick learner and passionate problem solver

What makes you stand out

  • Led a small software development team at a start-up or another fast-paced environment
