Unice Gwe Mbuamuh is a distinguished IT Specialist with over 16 years of experience in enterprise applications, cloud-native development, middleware, integration, and cybersecurity. Her journey from Cameroon to becoming a global tech leader is a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and unwavering passion for technology.
Born in Cameroon to middle-class parents who valued education, Unice was introduced to computers at the age of 12 during a holiday class. This early exposure ignited her passion for technology, leading her to pursue a degree in Computer Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language, Unice graduated with commendable grades, laying the foundation for her future career.
Unice began her career as an IT consultant with Steria in Germany, working with financial institutions like Deutsche Bank and Hypo-Vereinsbank. Her expertise in Java and J2EE development quickly set her apart. Over the years, she expanded her skills to include middleware, enterprise integration, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity, working with industry giants such as Red Hat, IBM, and UK government agencies like the Home Office and HMRC. At IBM UK Labs, Unice served as a Developer Advocate, creating cloud-native Java applications and engaging with the developer community. Her role as an IT Security Management Consultant at IBM Security Expert Labs saw her designing cutting-edge security solutions and leading migrations to IBM Cloud Pak for Security. She also became a recognized educator, training global teams and presenting at conferences like IBM Master Skills University. Her leadership spans across Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America, showcasing her ability to collaborate with diverse teams and cultures.
Unice’s career has not been without obstacles. As a Black woman in tech, she often found herself as the only person of her background in the room, facing racism and the constant need to prove her capabilities. Her resilience shone through when she battled and overcame breast cancer, drawing strength from the perseverance and adaptability she had cultivated throughout her life.
Unice is driven by a desire to inspire others, particularly Black women and girls in tech. She mentors, and coaches aspiring technologists, via her company PROWIV (Professionals with Vision).
