Dr Funmi Obembe is an Associate Professor and Head of the School of Technology at the University of Northampton, where she leads the Computing, Engineering, and Games programmes. Her work sits at the intersection of technology, data, education, and inclusive innovation.
Funmi began her career in industry as a software engineer and consultant, working with organisations including Leica Microsystems and Accenture, before moving into the public sector with the NHS. Alongside full-time professional roles, she completed a PhD, later transitioning into academia where she has held roles as lecturer, programme leader, and senior academic leader.
Her research interests include data analytics, artificial intelligence in education, and the ethical use of emerging technologies to support student success. She is a coauthor of a textbook on big data analytics and is passionate about widening participation and supporting underrepresented groups in technology.
Funmi is the founder of Inspire Black in Tech, an initiative focused on mentoring, visibility, and sustained support for Black students and professionals in technology. Her leadership is shaped by faith, empathy, and a deep commitment to creating spaces where people can thrive.
